Description: |
At the end of the 19th century the United States developed into the economic power, with New York as its financial capital. Huge fortunes were amassed by those who created the industries that fueled its growth. Most of these "captains of industry" chose to announce their success by commissioning a luxurious townhouse- preferably on fifth avenue, the city's most fashionable address. Although most of these houses no longer exsist the next generation of American entrepreneurs such as John Ringling were quick to acquire the trappings of these robber barons and incorporate them into the homes and public buildings they were constructing. Michael Kathrens will try to impart a glimpse into this unique American era and the splendor of the houses that exemplify its power and taste. Join us immedately after the lecture for a reception and book signing.
