Description: |
Peter Humfrey, Professor of Art History at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, will discus the reception of Veronese in England, from the early years of the 17th century, when his paintings first began to arrive there, until the end of the 19th century, when some of the finest examples in British private collections began to be exported to the United States. The main focus of the talk will be on changing attitudes towards the artist over the three centuries c. 1600-c. 1900, particularly as reflected in the history of collecting. He will also consider the pronouncements of critics such as Reynolds and Ruskin, and the possible influence of Veronese on English painters. Reception to follow.
