Gulf Coast Community Foundation Funds the “Art of Our Time” Initiative at The Ringling

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation recently pledged continued support for the 2013-14 season of The Ringling’s “Art of Our Time” initiative.

“Art of Our Time presents art and performance that explore the ideas and forms at play in the world today,” said Steven High, executive director at The Ringling. “This gift by Gulf Coast will further elevate the reputation and profile of The Ringling as a major player in the world of contemporary art.”

“Art of Our Time” programming for 2013-14 features the work of almost 100 living artists in two projects. The season opens with the Ringling International Arts Festival, a four-day event presenting performing artists from Spain, Belarus, Iran and the United States in more than 20 performances on five stage productions of music, theater, and dance. The second project, “NOWHERE: Finding Our Way in the 21st Century” (January--March 2014), is a three-month, interdisciplinary presentation of exhibitions, performances, ancillary lectures, conversations with artists and curators, and a two-day symposium with national leaders in the field of art and performance.

The Gulf Coast leverage grant provides The Ringling with resources to present quality contemporary art and performance programming at affordable prices while collaborating with a wide array of local, national, and international partners in the arts. The $50,000 grant supports programs that continue the legacy of A. Everett “Chick” Austin, the Ringling’s first executive director. Austin was a pioneer in presenting live performance in museums of art.

This is the second consecutive year that Gulf Coast supported contemporary art at the Ringling. Funding for the grant came from Gulf Coast’s Venice Endowment Fund. The fund was established in 1995 to provide for charitable needs in Venice, Fla. and surrounding communities.
