The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art Wins ADDY® Awards

SARASOTA, Fla. – March 15, 2007 –The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art received two 2007 ADDY® Awards from the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of the Suncoast.  The Museum received one gold and one silver distinction at the awards gala on Friday, March 2, 2007. 

ADDY® Awards honor excellence in advertising and cultivate the highest creative standards in the industry, and are the nation’s largest advertising competition. The Ringling Museum’s ADDY® submissions represent the collaborative efforts of the Museum’s Conservation, theater programming, curatorial and registration Departments along with the world-class printing and publishing firm, Serbin Printing.  The list of awards are as follows:

GOLD WINNER

Serbin Printing entered the publication on behalf of Serbin Printing and the Ringling Museum. Cà d'Zan, The Restoration of the Ringling Mansion by the Museum’s Chief conservator Michelle Scalera, and edited by Curator of Historical Documents and Tibbals Curator of the Circus Museum Deborah Walk.  The book gives a stage by stage, room by room, detailed description of the $15 million dollar restoration process. The book was illustrated throughout with photography by Giovanni Lunardi. It was designed to help visitors understand the restoration process and the Mansion’s historical legacy. Serbin Printing won the award for their design, color separation and printing work.

SILVER WINNER

Encore! A New Life for the Historic Asolo Theater, entered by Serbin Printing and the Ringling Museum won a silver award.  The book was edited by Ringling Museum’s Curator of Theater Programming Dwight Currie and Ringling Museum Head Librarian Linda R. McKee and designed and printed by Serbin Printing.  Ringling Museum Chief Conservator, Michelle Scalera and Museum Associate Director Tess Koncick, and Museum Assistant Curator Francoise Hack-Lof along with historians Dr. Creighton Gilbert and Dr. Eugene R. Gaddis also contributed to the book.  The 66-page paperback brings together a collection of essays that track the theater’s history from its 1798 birth in Asolo, Italy to its 2006 rebirth in the Ringling Museum’s new John M. McKay Visitors Pavilion. Its purpose was to document the theater’s history and serve as a memento for visitors in the Museum.

The projects awarded Gold distinctions will advance to the district competitions, and will compete against all the winners from Florida and the Caribbean.  District competitions will be held in May.  Winners from the district competition advance to the national competition in June.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Florida State University, is the state art museum of Florida.  It preserves, develops, and enhances the legacy of John and Mable Ringling and engages and educates a large and diverse audience in a world-renowned collection of art, Cà d'Zan (the Ringlings’ mansion) and its historic contents, collections documenting the circus and its history, the historic Asolo Theater, and the architecture, courtyard, gardens, and grounds overlooking Sarasota Bay.
