Spotlight Series at the Ringling Museum will boost your art IQ
Sarasota, FL April 16, 2008 – Opportunities to learn about The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art's permanent collection and special exhibitions await those signing up for the museum's continuing Spotlight Series of educational programs. Spotlights invite guests to get to know the galleries and grounds of the Museum, engage in meaningful discussion and meet Museum staff and guest lecturers.
Topics pertaining to permanent estate features, such as the Museum’s Cypriot and Asian collections, as well as opportunities to explore special exhibition will be featured. The Museum’s curatorial staff and special guests will lead the programs.
The Spotlight Series takes place on select Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Afternoon sessions will be made available if the morning sessions are sold out.
The upcoming Spotlight Series programs are:
- Old Master Drawings from the Ringling Collection, April 25
The artists' purpose, process and choice of media will be explored in this program focused on works from the Museum’s permanent collection.

Guests will gain a greater understanding of the controversy and creativity of the second half of the 20th century, a rich period in the visual arts exemplified by experiment and challenge.

Participants will be introduced to the precepts of Buddhism and explore the concept of spiritual being known as the bodhisattva from a variety of cultural perspectives.

- The Real and the Ideal in Architecture: Piero di Cosimo's Building of a Palace, June 6
Participants will look at the scholarly debate revealing the inherent meaning of this painting.

- Cypriot Collection at The Ringling Museum, June 13
Located at the crossroads of East and West, the island of Cyprus is a confluence of great classical cultures. Participants will investigate the visual art of Cyprus and it’s relationships with other great Mediterranean civilizations.

- Phantasmagoria: Specters of Absence, July 11
Guests will travel through the Phantasmagoria exhibition to experience how contemporary artists use both traditional and new media to explore "otherworldly" issues.

Participants will meet in the Visitors Pavilion at least 15 minutes prior to each program for registration and transportation to the Spotlight-featured venue. Tickets are $12 for members and $19 for non-members and can be reserved by calling 941.358.3180. It is recommended that participants reserve tickets in advance to ensure a spot in the program.
