New Stages kicks off with the World Premiere of Deep South by Alex Ketley, performed by The Foundry of San Francisco.
Deep South by Alex Ketley is a vivid realization of dance as the communicative vehicle by which we discover what unites us. Alex Ketley seeks and locates authentic expressions of movement in a seemingly unlikely cultural landscape. What he finds he shares in beautifully choreographed articulations of respect.
Following the success of No Hero (New Stages 2014), Ketley traveled throughout America’s rural South to explore the region’s cultural response to dance. For several weeks, the choreographer met and interviewed strangers about their relationship to dance and did small micro-performances in the RV parks, restaurants, town squares, and homes in which these interactions occurred. The result is Deep South, a testament to shared humanity told through live dance and documentary video that reveals the complexities and verities of the American South.
