May 5 | Myths and Monsters in the Museum of Art
In today’s art making program, we are challenging you to design and build your own mythological creature! We will provide you with tools to plan and build your creature out of Model Magic.
June 2 | Animals in Art
We are celebrating the departure of Ai Wei Wei’s Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads today by creating animal masks inspired by the Chinese zodiac! Participants will be asked to figure out the animal that represents their birth year in the Chinese zodiac and then to decorate a mask of that animal. Afterwards, families are invited to visit the Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads exhibition to see the sculpted animals in person!
July 7 | Art of Asia
Images of fish can be found throughout the Center for Asian Art as they are an important symbol in both China and Japan. Today, we will be creating our own fish images using paint and rubber fish replicas through a method called gyotaku, a traditional Japanese method of printing fish which has now transitioned into a beautiful art form.
August 4 | Contemporary Art
Today, we are creating abstract projects inspired by the painting Winter Sunday by Jon R. Schueler. We will be covering ceramic tiles in colored sharpies, then using isopropyl alcohol to blend and swirl the colors together and create movement like we can see in this painting.
