Join Dr. Sarah Cartwright for a closer look at a rare work by the Spanish painter Juan de Pareja (1606-1670). Pareja was an enslaved assistant to the painter Diego Velázquez, but after obtaining his freedom in 1654, he established himself as a successful independent painter. This talk will focus on Pareja’s earliest known work, the Flight into Egypt in The Ringling’s collection (signed and dated 1658).
