Eleanor Merritt Fellowship at The Ringling

The John and Mable Ringling is proud to present the Eleanor Merritt Fellowship at The Ringling. This fellowship is designed to support underrepresented graduate students who have an interest in arts and museum professions. The Ringling is dedicated to increasing diversity among professional staff in the museum field and is thrilled to solidify our commitment to this effort by joining the list of esteemed programs in the nation who offer educational and professional support to underrepresented students.

This fellowship is named to honor Eleanor Merritt, The Ringling’s first African American Board Member and a prolific artist. Merritt’s expansive body of work explored the interrelatedness of society, spirituality, and gender while using the human figure in a range of styles derived from a wide cultural matrix inclusive of her African and Caribbean roots as well as the Abstract Expressionist education, she received at Brooklyn College in the 1950s.

The Eleanor Merritt Fellowship will be a one-year paid position at The Ringling immersing participants in critical components of museum professional careers in art, museum, and art-related fields such as education, community engagement and administration. Fellows will receive hands-on work experience in various museum functions, including curatorial, education, registration, visitor services, marketing, and development. Fellows will receive individualized mentoring from the Associate Director of Academic Affairs and Collections at The Ringling.
