Picturing Japan

Jan 18, 2014 – Apr 6, 2014
Past Event
Museum of Art

In the second half of the nineteenth century Japan’s last years as an isolated pre-industrial society were witnessed and documented by early photographers.  Though works of art in their own right, their photographs were further enhanced by the selective addition of color, painted by Japanese artists who transformed them in the inspired tradition of woodblock prints.
