Selina Román: Solar Flare II

Selina Román was born in Florida in 1978. She began her career as a journalist, uncovering stories of injustice among marginalized communities including migrant farm workers. She then worked in the private-sector intelligence community, and “that clandestine world,” her online bio states, “Rooted in surveillance, gestures and coded details, rekindled her love of photography.”

Román's experiences have given her a keen sense of the unique surfaces and textures of her native state as well as an insider’s understanding of its social fabric. In 2013 she completed her MFA at the University of South Florida, and over the past several years she has gained notoriety for her conceptual work nationally and internationally. She currently teaches visual art and photography courses at Hillsborough Community College and the Art Institute of Tampa.

Three of Román's works in The Ringling Collection are from her series Please Disturb, a raucous, secretive, and atmospheric series of portraits and still lifes set in hotel and motel rooms. Román uses these rooms as her temporary studios and invites models to work in collaboration with her to strategize their photoshoots. Román has a knack for finding aging tourist hotels that still maintain their character and vernacular charm, and has the ability to truly convey that atmosphere in her images. Combined with the poses of her model/collaborators and props, Roman creates compositions that are as striking for their formal qualities and color and texture as they are intriguing for their ability to hint at ambiguous, underlying narratives.
