    Summer Internships

    The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, will be offering paid internships for ten weeks from June 6 – August 12, 2016. The Ringling is the State Art Museum of Florida and a part of Florida State University. It consists of art and circus museums, as well as a historic mansion and theater, all on a 66-acre site overlooking Sarasota Bay.

    Summer internships combine practical, hands-on experience working on a project for a specific department with exposure to all aspects of The Ringling’s operation. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2016.

    Available 2016 Intern Positions

    Position: Archives Intern

    Department: The Ringling Archives

    Responsibilities: Participate in the activities of the department; assist with digitization projects, including cataloguing, editing, scanning, and entering data into The Ringling’s collections management system; assist with exhibition planning and development; assist with other projects as needed.

    Qualifications: Pursuing a BA; strong interest in the management of digital collections and experience in archival collections.


    Position: Collections Management Intern

    Department: Collections Management

    Responsibilities: The Summer Intern will be introduced to all aspects of Collections Management and its role within the Ringling Museum.  S/he is expected to gain a broad understanding of the Registration profession and will attend exhibition openings; gallery talks, department, division, and board meetings as well as work with different Museum departments on small projects. The 2016 project will be focused on developing a workflow and plan of care for a recently donated collection of approximately 18,000 stereograph negatives, cards, and stereoscopes; The intern will examine, catalogue, and rehouse part of the collections and from there develop a strategy so other interns or staff can continue to work on this interesting collection while following developed guidelines and standards.

    Qualifications: Graduate student in museum studies, art history, history, or library sciences or archives.

    Position: Curatorial Intern (Exhibitions)

    Department: Curatorial (Exhibitions)

    Responsibilities: Assist with the preparation of upcoming special exhibitions; research content and prepare didactics; assist with other duties as needed.

    Qualifications: Graduate student in art history with an interest in museums; excellent research and writing skills.


    Position: Education Intern

    Department: Education

    Responsibilities: Assist with the development of in-gallery guides and activities to enhance family visits to The Ringling; assist with educational programming as needed.

    Qualifications: Graduate student with strong research and communication skills; good working knowledge of art history; K-12 classroom or other experience with children.


    Position: Library Intern

    Department: The Ringling Art Library

    Responsibilities: The Art Library of The Ringling has Karl Bickel’s personal library as a part of its rare book collection.  The library’s intern will research this collection and its significance, write a condition report and description of each book, and compile a short biography of Karl Bickel focusing on his contribution to Sarasota and The Ringling.  With the result of this research, a virtual exhibition will be curated for inclusion on the library’s portion of the museum’s website.

    Qualifications: Bachelors degree in art history or related field; current enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLIS program with an interest in rare books.


    Position: Visitor Services Intern 

    Department: Visitor Services

    Responsibilities: Assist with summer Circus Spectacular reservations, intake, check-in, and overall support of the program; assist Admissions Manager & Supervisor with day to day admissions operations including group sales and check in; assist with other duties as needed.

    Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (in field reflective of customer service management skills)
